4. Presentation and approval of the minutes of the
Vilnius-meeting
published beforehand on the web-site www.jesuits-europe.org/alumn/
Alain Deneef asked to go over the different actions decided in Vilnius to see which progress could be done. As it also has to do with the Lisbon program, this point has to be discussed.
Ciro asks to discuss the different points he tackled in his speech. He thinks that the results of the work done during the last three years are quite meagre. We should aspire to more concrete results.
As we already determined the subjects to be discussed at the Congress, and as we don't have sufficient time for new discussions, we will put on the table this document as working document for the Congress.
We can plan the discussion for the Sunday morning for those who are interested, instead of having the planned visit.
Some of us regret that father general could not join us.
Father Salembier explains that the positions are clear:
The interlocutors of Father general are the representatives of the World
Union, in the person of Bernard Thompson, who besides will meet Father
General.
The President of the conference of the European Provincials, Father
Rotsaert is the interlocutor of the European Confederation. Father
Rotsaert coordinates all activities and groups of the Society at European
level.
Concerning the national associations, they are in contact with their
Father provincial.
Alain Deneef makes the proposal to organise one of our next meetings at the same time and the same place to get to know each other.
5. News from the federations:
Germany: The main objective of the German alumni/ae is to improve the relationship between the, schools, the almuni/ae and the Company. The colleges started to list the names of the alumi/ae on the basis of their profession.
The alumni/ae delegated a professional alumnus (and bore the costs) to assist the « magis » team of the Jesuits (magis – le the project of pre-meeting of the World Youth Day in Cologne in 2005)
Lithuania: The alumni/ae put their knowledge and their Internet
network at disposal. They organise a summer camp for young european
alumni/ae
They organise meetings with the pupils and give practical advice to those
who enter University.
Italy: More and more colleges have closed down during the last years. 6 colleges still exist. There used to be 22 associations, there are only 13 left, 6 of which are in one and the same college. In Turin, the almuni/ae, the Company and the pupil's parents have created an fund, which is supposed to help the college to survive, to pay grants and to improve the college equipment.
The MAGIS - project is cooperation with the Company and has the
status of an NGO. It is financed by the Italian Ministry for foreign
affairs and by the European Union.
The exchange between pupils of different European colleges will be
reinforced.
French-speaking Belgium: The number of pupils in the colleges has never been that high before. There are still Jesuits in only three schools. The others have become secular schools. The alumni/ae are well integrated in the functioning at different levels. They finance different projects and organise career advice or guidance days. The foundation Kotzka offers grants to students of Eastern Europe willing to finish their studies. As all expenses are paid, only a restricted number of students can get a grant.
Great Britain: There is no national federation, but there are
associations in the schools.
Only one school has a Jesuit as headmaster. In the other schools, the
Jesuits are present as chaplains.
There exist close contacts with schools from Eastern Europe. The
relationship between the schools and the Company is very close. Father
Stewart regularly goes to visit the schools.
The schools sponsor projects of the Company in Africa and work on those
projects during
3 - 5 years.
Malta: there are 2 projects: « Catholics and Peace » - there will
be a Congress.
Jesuits have coached students during 10 months, to conclude there has been
a retreat.
There is a project of integrating spirituality and the working world.
Spain: The website, which had been created to be a communication
and information platform has been accepted very well.
The main event was the Congress in Saragossa
Belgium, Flemish region: There are no Jesuits any more in the
Colleges, but there is a very close cooperation between the colleges,
which is very much supported by the Company still financially in charge of
schools.
There is a close cooperation with the alumi/ae within the framework of
common projects.
In the colleges, the pupils are obliged to take part in social projects,
followed-up by the parents. This is an opportunity for the federation to
establish contacts between colleges and alumni/ae..
Poland: There used to be an association of alumni/ae before the
war. This association has been the driving force for the reopening of the
College in Gdynia, this is the reason why there are so close connections
between the alumin/ae and the College. The association organises the fund
raising and computer courses for elder people given by the pupils and
teachers.
Meetings are organised at Christmas and Eastern.
In the year 2005, a new College will be opened in the south of Poland.
Hungary: During the communist regime, Jesuit institutions were
forbidden. The last college closed the door 1947 (old boys). 1990 a new
association of alumni/ae was created in Pesch.
Nowadays the Hungarian association consists of « old boys », alumni/ae of
the Academy of Ferenc Faludy, of the S. Ignatius Students House in
Budapest and of the College of Miskolc.
The problem is to activate young people. This can be done through the
organisation of workshops for students, foreign language courses, an
internet web-site.
UANEC: is represented in the Council of Europe as an NGO and takes part in three commissions: human rights, education and health. The next meeting will be held in Budapest.
World Union: celebration of the 50th anniversary. It has been
founded along the same lines as the European federation and the Iberian
American federation (1943).
Communication through the Internet takes an increasing importance, 5500
connections can be counted every month, which represents 0,14% of the
potential of 3,5 million alumni/ae There will be an updating more
frequently.
50 alumni/ae of the College of Jamhour in Libanon have created an
association in London (French Internet page : www.anciensjamhour.com).
The next Congress of the World Union will take place in Bosston in the
year 2006.
The message adressed by Father general at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Confederation has been forwarded. (see document annexed). The text, which had not been approved unanimously, had to be discussed).
Finally the text has been adopted with 9 votes in favour, 1 vote
against and 1 abstention.

7. Presentation of the working groups
Education group par Nacho Menendez : To collect in formations about the different education centers in Europe and the work done. It has been decides to send a questionnaire to all the headmasters and all the presidents of national associations. The results of the survey will be presented in Poland.
Visibility of our network, you the presence of the network of
our associations: In Malta, decision has been taken, to create a database.
We found an existing system, called « open–BC », which can
be adapted to our needs. It exists in several languags. Each federation is
invited to ask its members to test this site, so that we can decide at our
next meeting if we want to adapt that site, so that it can be presented at
the Lisbon congress.
Presentation of the system
Young participants created a working group. The result of their
work is a list made of 10 points:
- The international interaction is a must (meet physically)
- Each federation should have a representative of the young alumni/ae
- It is necessary to use all the modern communications means
- The result of our actions must be measurable and realistic
- We have to spread the information on national level, that there exists a
alumni/ae organisation
which is working quite well
- There is a will to become more active and local projects are already
functioning
- The young alumni/ae need somebody to support them not only at a spiritual
level, but also at a
practical level.
- The attractiveness of the projects is not only desirable, but also a
necessity
Find funds at the level of the European Union, World Union, etc.. to be able to put up projects.
Pilgrimages and summer camps are an excellent method to stimulate international cooperation.
The Ignatian spirit must be the basis of any action
