Jesuit European Volunteers

The Jesuit Volunteers is a full time lay volunteer organization
grounded in the principles of Ignatian Spirituality. We offer young men and
women the opportunity to complete a year or more of service experience with
the focus on peace and justice. The challenge to Jesuit Volunteers is to
integrate Christian faith by working and living directly with the poor and
marginalized. It is expected that the Jesuit Volunteers will open their minds
and hearts to live always conscious of the poor, committed to the Church's
mission of promoting justice in the service of faith. In this experience, the
volunteers live in an intentional community, on a simple stipend, and explore
together the root causes of social injustice. The values of the Jesuit
Volunteers are confirmed in these four tenets: Social Justice, Ignatian
Spirituality, Community Living, and Simple
Lifestyle.
Christian faith challenges the volunteer to stand up for social justice,
to analyze the structures of society and to seek solutions. Volunteers work
in various placements: with the mentally or physically disabled, with the
poor and homeless, with persons with addictions, with refugees and
asylum-seekers, with abused and/or abandoned persons,
etc.
This can be summed up in the phrase “finding God in all things". The
Ignatian charisma invites women and men to search for and find God in every
circumstance of his life, not just in explicitly religious situations or
activities such as prayer in church or in private. It implies that God is
present everywhere and, though invisible, can be “found" in any and all of
the creatures which God has made. Essentially, God's love bears fruit in
lives, work and relationships through reflection and
prayer.
Composed of women and men from diverse backgrounds, communities challenge
the volunteer to admit and also accept his/her own strengths and weaknesses,
as well as those of others. Community life offers a place to share
experiences, faith and hope; thus integrating the members in the life of the
church. During the JEV year, each community is accompanied by a support
person. This is either an Ex-JEV or a Jesuit, or a person familiar with the
Ignatian spirituality, who participates in the weekly community meetings and
assists the group in growing together and supporting one another during the
year.
The simplicity with which JEVs live in all areas of life should contrast
with the consumerism of our culture. It is also a part of the community's
solidarity with those among whom it works. It helps one become conscious of
individual wants and needs, and be attentive to real
values.
The experience of this year can be of lasting value. It can broaden
horizons, challenge values and change lives.
